Last night, a friend told me one of his white friends was defending their use of the word “nigga” saying it’s not racist because they don’t mean it in a harmful way. I went to check it out and it seems that you can say whatever you want if the people it offends can’t give a proper defence. So I thought I’d give it a try:
It’s having to struggle. It’s being at a disadvantage because of your name, the melanin in your skin, and the stereotypes you will be born and die with. It’s the countless children sentenced to 10 years in prison for a dime bag of weed because the judges have been paid for by the Prison-Industrial Complex, while you get the slap on the wrist. It’s because we wish we had the opportunities you squander. It’s because our professional athletes are frowned upon for making too much money, but not your professional bankers who crippled the American, nay, THE WORLD ECONOMY. It’s because we are the most perfect physical specimen humanity has to offer, from our skin to our cardiovascular system, and its because I can be petty like that, because this is the one month out of the year you deem necessary to learn my history, American history.
It’s because we can’t afford to leave the ghetto you put us in that has inadequate water, education, housing, communities, love, fathers, lifespans, nutrition, and I’m sure you’re thinking of the one I missed.
It’s because when you see me walking, you go to the other side of the street, your wife clutches her purse, and you reach for your gun.
It’s because we wish we had the opportunities you squander. We wish we could’ve said welcome home daddy. We wish we could afford a car that wouldn’t break down on our way to serve you, massuh. It’s because it’s 2016 and you think because you’re voting for Trump or Sanders you’re progressive and it entitles you to such privileges…I mean liberties as an expanded vocabulary, but in reality, you’d kill yourself if you woke up black.
Let me be clear; we don’t want to be you. We pity you. We lament for your ignorance and your weakness, and only wish wisdom and understanding to your life.
But you most certainly wish you could be us.
